Zumba

I have had 2 experiences with Zumba.

1) In college I took a Zumba fitness class for credit. It was awesome. I have a bunch of friends taking the class too and we were all dancing and making choreography to Top 40s pop songs. We even did a  fun flashmob at the end. It was amazing.

2) I took a Zumba class with my mom last fall as a fun and as quirky way for the two of us to bond and get exercise together. When I come to my first class I notice immediately that, I am the youngest person in the class by at least 20 years. Thankfully, the instructor is really nice and says nothing about it…. but she also liked to take our Zumba session outside when the weather was nice. Outside. Where people could see us. And it was fine because people got over it after a few minutes of staring. And then our instructor tired something new. She played Rihanna’s S&M. Loud. And the routine had a lot of booty pops and shimmying. Then the other people started staring again but with a noticeable open mouth horror struck quality. Remember, most of the class was between 40 and 50. This included my mom. My dear mother whose native language is not English turn to me at one point as mouthed “Is this song about sex?” Then the instructor started to sing along. The second time she belted out “But chains and whips excite me” followed by deep squats I thought I was actually going to black out for a minute. On the brighter side of things, I sweat a lot that session, not from working out but from pure embarrassment and fear.
